Ex-traffic cop gets life sentence for murder

Masingita Gloria Chabane (45), a former Malamulele traffic officer was handed a harsh sentence after a long consideration for the murder of Hlulani Reason Chauke committed in 2015.

A family representative, Wilson Mahlahule says, “Although as a family we do not have closure since the deceased remains were never found, we are happy that justice has been served. After the life sentence was handed to Masingita, as a family and members of the community we took a decision to celebrate the courts outcome and that we will never see Masingita again just like our daughter Hlulani.”

The Limpopo High court sitting in Thohoyandou sentenced Chabane to life imprisonment after she was convicted of murder, robbery, two counts of kidnapping and defeating ends of justice.

The accused and the co-accused who pleaded guilty on murder and sentenced to 25 years imprisonment were involved in these criminal activities on 01 October 2015 when they fetched Hlulani together
with her one-month old son from her home to Malamulele home affairs offices on the pretext that the accused would assist her to obtain her son’s birth certificate.

Contrary to the arrangement, both accused drove to the Luvuvhu river, whereupon arrival they killed the deceased and concealed her body. The accused then took the infant and kept him for herself until she was arrested.
National Prosecuting Authority Provincial spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi has welcomed the sentence
and commended the prosecution and investigation team for their exceptional work.
