Limpopo learners shine at the release of 2017 matric results

The National Senior Certificate (NSC) results released this evening show a slight increase in the 2017 matric pass rate for Limpopo and the provinces’ learners continue to dominate top achievers.
Limpopo’s class of 2017 attending public schools achieved a 65.6 % pass rate up 3.1% from last year’s 62.2%.
This was announced by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga during the official release of the 2017 NSC results in Auckland Park, Johannesburg.

The class of 2017 top achiever in Mathematics and Science is Takalani Bambela from Tshivhase secondary school in the Vhembe district and he also came in third in quintile 2 schools.Notable top achieving schools in the province include Dendron secondary school in the Capricorn district, Mbilwi, Thengwe and Tshivhase senior secondary schools, all in the Vhembe district of Limpopo.

Motshekga announced that the overall matric pass rate for 2017 is 75.1%, an improvement from 2016’s 72.5% which is inclusive of progressed learners.Progressed learners are those progressed from grade 11 in 2016 to grade 12 in 2017.
Motshekga says 28% of the learners achieved Bachelor passes, 30.2% achieved Diploma passes, 16,1 % achieved Higher Certificate passes while 99 learners achieved National Senior Certificate passes.

“6 726 distinctions were achieved for Mathematics and 7 861 distinctions were achieved for Physical science and a total of 161 081 distinctions were achieved, a 1.8 improvement from 2016.” says Motshekga
The Minister says Limpopo, along with Eastern Cape (EC) are the only two provinces that achieved pass rates under 70% but both showed improvement with EC achieving a 65% pass.

Kwazulu-Natal achieved 72.9%, Mpumalanga achieved 74.8%, Northern Cape achieved 76.6 % and the North West achieved 79.4%,
The Minister says Western Cape attained 82.7%, Gauteng coming second at 85.1% and the Free State retained its position as the best performing province at 86.1%.

Individual learner results will be available from tomorrow Friday 5 January 2017 and in Limpopo, Education MEC Ishmael Kgetjepe will officially release them from the Ranch hotel outside Polokwane.

The MEC will give a breakdown of the provincial results, factors affecting performance and the magnitude of exams in total.

Learners and schools with high levels of academic excellence will also be awarded in various categories.
