Wits University says it has finalised its applications for the 2018 academic year, and will not be accepting any further applications for the first semester intake.
In a released statement, the University says the closing date for undergraduate studies at the University was the 30 September 2017.
The institution says it has received 56 901 applications for first year enrolments for the 2018 academic year and has place for 5 664 first year students adding that it only has the capacity to enrol a maximum of 36 400 full time students.
This comes as the Economic Freedom Fighters’ has called on students to report to universities of their choice at the start of the academic year to be enrolled.
President Jacob Zuma’s December 16th 2017 announcement of free education is at the centre of uncertainty about what is going to happen at institutions of higher learning across the country as they open for the 2018 academic year.
However, at a press briefing in Pretoria earlier today, Higher Education and Training Minister Hlengiwe Mkhize moved to clarify the uncertainty and said the decision announced by the Presidency would not be implemented immediately.
She told reporters that the new system would be phased within the next five years and that during this academic year, only applicants who have received a firm offer from a University or TVET college, will be assessed for funding.
Mkhize concluded by emphasising that the decision announced by President Jacob Zuma late last year, is not meant to disrupt normal activities at universities across the country.
