The Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has warned farmers and crop growers in Limpopo to be vigilant at all times in looking after their fields. This follows
recent concerns of the rapid spread of the Fall Armyworm.
It is reported that the spread of the Fall Armyworm affects all five districts in Limpopo. The worm which was first detected in the province in early 2017 causes damage by attacking primarily
maize, sorghum and nearly 70 other host species.
“We are working together with the agricultural research council and we are in the process of getting a pesticide,’’ says Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s spokesperson, Selby Makgotho.
Makgotho further advices affected farmers to report all Armyworm incidences to their local agricultural offices immediately for assistance with identification, confirmation and management of the pest.
The areas that have reported the Armyworm incidence are Mutale, Matangari, Thohoyandou, Mashamba, Virani in the Vhembe district, Lulekani, Nwamitwa and Hoedspruit in the
Mopani district, Thabazimbi, Bela Bela, Mookgopong, Mokgalakwena in the Waterberg district, Polokwane in the Capricorn district and Groblersdal in the Sekhukhune district.
